Podcast: when a Reel is good even if it has few views

In short

  • Views alone don’t indicate whether a Reel works: it may have reach without impact or conversions.
  • Video retention is the key metric for evaluating a Reel’s quality.
  • With few views but good retention, it’s worth repeating the format, adjusting the opening, and repurposing the content.
In this article

One of the biggest obsessions on Instagram remains the same: views. You upload a Reel, look at the number of views, and decide whether it has worked or not. And that’s where the mistake lies. Because not all Reels are made to go viral, and not all content that doesn’t take off is bad content.

The mistake of measuring a Reel solely by its views

Views are an easy metric to understand… and that’s precisely why they’re dangerous.

A Reel can have:

  • Many views
  • Little impact
  • Zero conversions

And another can have:

  • Few views
  • High retention
  • Saves, clicks, or messages

The problem isn’t the Reel. It’s how you’re evaluating it.

The metric that really matters: retention

If there’s one key metric for determining whether a Reel is good or not, it’s this: video retention.

Clear example (30-second Reel)

A 30-second Reel with these figures:

  • 45–50% average retention

It’s a good Reel, even if it isn’t viral.

Why?

  • People watch almost half of the video
  • The content fulfills its purpose
  • It’s a replicable and optimizable format

Now compare it with another:

  • 12% retention

A lot of noise, little value.

When a Reel with few views IS working

A Reel is good even if it has few views if it meets any of these criteria:

  • It has good retention
  • It generates saves
  • It prompts genuine comments
  • It drives traffic to the profile or website
  • It works as part of a series or system

Not all content is designed for discovery.

What to do if a Reel has few views but good retention

If a Reel retains viewers well but doesn’t scale:

  • Repeat the format
  • Change the opening hook
  • Adjust the on-screen text
  • Try another CTA
  • Repurpose it as UGC for ads
  • Cut it into micro-clips

Don’t kill a good idea because of a poor start.

And if you want to create Reels with real people, natural formats, and content that works beyond the number of views, at HICARI you can not only access the UGC platform to request individual videos—we’re your partner in content generation, reach, and conversion strategy.
